Charity cycle raises funds

DYNAMIC husband and wife duo Salma and Rashid Hamid rallied more than 100 enthusiasts to help raise funds for people in Africa.

The couple, from Moseley, organised the Cycle Relief event in Cannon Hill Park, Edgbaston yesterday. Scores of cyclists cycled from Cannon Hill Park to Cofton Park and the Lickey Hills to raise cash.

The annual event, which is in its third year, has already raised £24,000 which is used to pay for water wells in Africa.

Salma said: "Clean water is a basic need for people to live and with so many diseases caused by lack of clean water, it is important to dig wells.

"We wanted to do something for people in Africa and this is one way to raise awareness of their needs.

"Most people in this country are very fortunate and this is our way of giving something back."

Once the riders returned to Cannon Hill Park they were treated to a fun day including food stalls, face painting and a lucky dip.
