Byrne and Whitby on same track

CITY leaders were today a step nearer securing the extra £220 million Government cash needed towards the long-awaited revamp of New Street Station.

The New Street steering committee was meeting today for an update on the Gateway bid.

It comes a month after the Government approved a £128 million grant to Network Rail for the transport element of the project. More is needed for the passenger areas and shopping centre.

But the Department for Transport was critical of Birmingham's bid for extra cash and demanded lower cost options and further details of private sector investment.

City council leader Mike Whitby and West Midlands minister Liam Byrne both pledged to iron out the issues and the pair meet on Monday to push for a swift decision from the Government.

Coun Whitby said: "I am in no doubt that our original plan is the only viable option if Government are to stick to their word and help us deliver a modern transport hub, fit for the 21st century.

"We believe the current proposals will act as a real catalyst for the economic, cultural and physical regeneration of both the city, and far wider city region. We cannot settle for second best."

Once secured the £350 million total investment should unlock a further £200 million in private sector cash.
