Helping hand for robbed oap

AN 81-YEAR-old Black Country woman who had £3,300 stolen by a bogus caller has had her savings back thanks to the generosity of two local businesses.

The pensioner, from the East Park Estate, Wolverhampton, had the money snatched when a conman called at her home and said he needed to remove some tree roots near to her property. He then asked for the money for the work and disappeared.

The woman thought the bogus caller could be from the Mears Group, who carry out improvement work on behalf of Wolverhampton Homes, as she had recently received an information pack from them.

The Mears Group is donating £3,050 and Wolverhampton Homes £250 to her lost savings.

Both companies are now urging all residents to be on their guard against bogus callers and to always ask for identification.

Lesley Roberts, chief executive Wolverhampton Homes, said: "This elderly lady was extremely distressed after this terrible incident and I was really upset to hear about it. All Wolverhampton Homes staff and contractors always carry identification and I would stress to all tenants to always check for ID - if in doubt do not let them into your property.

"Ask them for a contact number to call to verify their credentials or contact the police straight away if you suspect foul play. I am very grateful to Mears for their generous contribution which is indicative of strong partnership working between organisations in Wolverhampton." Police are investigating the incident.
