Coach driver bailed

THE Midland driver of a National Express coach which overturned last week, injuring 33 people, has been freed on bail, police said.

Les Weinburg (34), below, from West Bromwich, was arrested immediately after the incident on suspicion of drink-driving and dangerous driving.

He was at the wheel of the single-decker last Monday when it clipped the kerb and toppled over on a slip road to the M1 motorway at Newport Pagnell services in Buckinghamshire.

Passers-by and emergency workers helped rescue the 33 passengers, who were treated for their injuries.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said today: "The driver is in a stable condition at Sandwell General Hospital in West Bromwich.

"It is likely that he will be discharged. He has been released on police bail and will return to Milton Keynes police station on October 1."

One passenger, a woman aged 45, remains at Northampton General Hospital, a 20-year-old Polish man remains in a stable condition in hospital in Milton Keynes, while two more passengers, a 39-year-old woman and a 61-year-old man, both stable, continue to be treated in hospital in Oxford, police said.

The coach was on its way to Luton and Stansted Airports from Birmingham.

In January, three people died after a National Express coach crashed and overturned on an M4/M25 slip road.
