New advice centre for people with diabetes

DIABETES sufferers in Sandwell were today being given a boost with the opening of a new advice centre.

A special education room was being opened at Sand-well General Hospital, thanks to a £400 donation in memory of Ron Benbow.

Mr Benbow, who recently died, had coped with diabetes for more than 60 years and was an active member of the Sandwell Diabetes Support Group.

In recognition of his success and his efforts to help other sufferers he was awarded 50 and 60-year medals from the national charity Diabetes UK.

His widow, Mary, was today cutting a ribbon to declare the Benbow Diabetes Education Room officially open and has donated his medals to the hospital.

Sister Noreen Barker said the new education room would be a real asset to patients. "Diabetes patients attend hospital for regular training classes. In the past we have held these structured education courses in rooms scattered across the hospital site. Now, thanks to the opening of this new room, they will have their own dedicated area."

Patients who would like more information on courses can call 0121 507 3063.
