Man held after huge lead discovery

POLICE have confiscated 15 tonnes of lead as part of a major crackdown on metal thefts in the Midlands.

A 31-year-old man from West Bromwich was arrested at premises on Pear Tree Lane, Brierley Hill, on Thursday.

Following routine inquires as part of Operation Steel, police seized 15 one-tonne Hessian sacks of lead shot, believed to be worth about £15,000. The man has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Insp Richard Jones, of Brierley Hill police station, said: "Operation Steel has been a success and we will continue to visit scrap and metal salvage dealers."

Anyone with information, or if they are missing 15 one-tonne bags of lead shot, can call police at Brierley Hill on 0845 113 5000.
