Head teacher dies at parents' meeting

TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular Midland head teacher who died after suffering a heart attack while in a meeting with parents.

Mark Coleman fell seriously ill while talking to parents last Thursday evening.

Mr Coleman, aged 50, collapsed at Mayfield Preparatory School, in Sutton Road, Walsall. Six parents, all doctors, attempted to resuscitate him prior to the arrival of paramedics.

He was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The school was closed the following day as a mark of respect.

Rugby fan Mr Coleman led the private school for two years but had taught there since 1996.

Mr Coleman's wife is believed to also teach at the school. He leaves two sons.

A school spokesman said: "Our deepest sympathies got out to his wife and children.

"His death was totally unexpected. He will be missed by everyone. He was very popular."

The board of governors at the school, which has about 200 pupils aged three to 11, has voted to make Garry Cook the acting head teacher. Solicitor Charles Underwood, who knew Mr Coleman through his role as clerk to the governors, said: "The staff and pupils there are shocked."

Parents Pranay and Kajal Paw, whose three children all attended the school, said he was an excellent and well-loved head master.
