College defends plan to axe courses

Sandwell College.

A MIDLAND college under pressure to improve today defended its decision to reduce the number of courses.

Sandwell College, which has its main campus in West Bromwich, was last year given a year's notice to improve by the Learning and Skills Council.

Now staff have voiced fears over the future of the college after it closed down a range of "non-viable" courses.

Tutors have called on principal Val Bailey to resign and the University and College Union demanded the college reconsiders its actions.

But a statement issued today by Dhiren Khatwa, spokesperson at the college, defended the move.

The statement said: "The college has reduced the number of courses on offer. We're doing what other colleges are doing at this time of the year - removing non-viable courses."

The statement said those affected had been offered guidance and advice.
