As a family, we all do our best!

Pat Powell with son Trevor, grandson Ryan Whan in Beaver uniform and grand-daughter Kerry Whan, who is in her guide uniform.

PAT Powell may be 60 years older than her grandson, but the pair have one thing in common - love of the Scouts.

Pat became a leader of the Beavers, a junior branch of the Scout Movement, 23 years ago, and has never looked back.

Her love of the Scout Movement, which this year celebrates its 100th birthday, has been handed down through her family.

Her son, 34-year-old Trevor, is also a leader at the 34th Birmingham Scout Group, in Ward End, and her six-year-old grandson Ryan Whan is a Beaver at a group in Sutton Coldfield.

Ryan's sister Kerry, aged 10, is a Guide, and the foursome are now urging former Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from across the Midlands to share their memories for a project called Young Scout, Old Scout.

Funded by a £42,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the project will collate memories to create a DVD and exhibition that will show Scouting through the generations.

Pat, aged 66, of Ward End, said: "I got into being a Beaver leader when I started taking my son to Cubs. It's a rewarding role and has become a huge part of my life.

"It's more than just a meeting each week, it's a way of life, contributing to the social upbringing of children.

"The values young people learn in Scouting haven't changed over the last 100 years, and I urge anyone who has had an involvement in the movement to come forward and share their stories.

"Beavers, Cubs and Scouts today will benefit greatly from the stories of past Scouters and we will be able to create a unique time capsule for future generations of Scouts in Birmingham."

Anne Jenkins, of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: "Scouting has played a vital role in society, equipping generations of Scouts with skills for life.

"Grandfathers, fathers, sons and now daughters too can all share in the unique bond"
