Glass thrust into eye of pub man

A MAN was in a serious condition in hospital today after being set upon by a gang of men in West Bromwich and "glassed" in the eye.

The 40-year-old had just left the Ridgeacre pub, in New Gas Street, with his family when the late night incident took place.

He was waiting outside for a taxi when a row broke out and he was attacked by up to six Asian men and a mixed race or dark-skinned man who had also left the pub.

West Midlands Police said today: "The man was pushed before being struck in the face with a glass, which penetrated his eye. The group then made off from the scene."

The attack happened between 11.30 pm on Saturday and 12.15am on Sunday.

A large number of people were believed to outside the pub at the time.

The victim remained in hospital in a "serious" condition today with a severe injury to his left eye.

One attacker is described as a mixed race or dark skinned man, aged 20-25, around 5ft 11in, and of medium build, wearing khaki-coloured combat clothing.

The offenders are believed to have been drinking in the Ridgeacre pub throughout the evening.

Police said they were also keen to trace the driver of a red Vauxhall Corsa, possibly 03-registered, which was present at the timeÊof the incident and left the scene shortly after.
