Hospital boss' 'regret' over OAP tragedy

THE boss of a city hospital has expressed regret for the death of an elderly woman due to health and safety errors.

Mark Goldman, chief executive of Heartlands Hospital, revealed how the tragedy has affected him in a staff and patient magazine.

Heartlands was fined £25,000 and ordered to pay £29,940 costs in July after admitting being in breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act, which led to the death of 73-year-old patient Violet Parkes.

Grandmother-of-two Mrs Parkes, of Pixhall Walk, Castle Vale, was being treated at the hospital for breast cancer, liver and heart disease in June 2004.

But Birmingham Crown Court heard she fell and injured herself because cot sides were not secured on the bed and subsequently died from bronchial pheumonia.

Mr Goldman publicly expressed regret in this month's hospital magazine.
