Bribery claim ruled out by judge

A JUDGE has made clear that there are no allegations of bribery in the "dirty tricks" case over May's council elections in Birmingham.

Judge Timothy Straker QC told an alection court: "The petitioner has made it plain that there is no suggestion that officers within the West Midlands Regional Labour Party acted in any way which can be characterised as dishonest or corrupt in the consequence of the receipt of favours or rewards."

A Liberal Democrat barrister had claimed earlier that Labour officials in the West Midlands had measures in place to dump candidates that they did not favour.

But at an election court being held in Birmingham the Labour Party's counsel, Gavin Millar QC, accused Graham Brodie, representing the Liberal Democrats, of "headline grabbing" in his opening statement.
