Asda-Walmart at Minworth, Sutton Coldfield.

BIRMINGHAM'S largest superstore is set to go ahead with a multi-million-pound redevelopment.

The 24-hour Asda Wal-Mart store in Minworth, near Sutton Coldfield, will be demolished and completely rebuilt under plans which city councillors are set to approve when they meet on Thursday.

The decision would then rubber-stamped by the minister for commuties and local government allowing, Asda to demolish the existing store, built in 1974.

Planners have received 28 objections from neighbours, including the Walmley Residents Association and a petition signed by 178 people.

Complaints including increases in traffic nuisance, noise from round the clock deliveries and litter.

Nine residents supported the redevelopment and a survey answered by 382 customers found 86 per cent in favour.

Planning officers believe the new store will be an improvement on the current "poor quality" building and have reccommended approval.

Asda's property communications manager, Allison Darling, said: "Asda has a long term commitment to Minworth and we want to invest in a new store for our customers. The current building is more than 30 years old and has served the community well.

"We have listened to the concerns of our customers and colleagues and have devised a scheme that will provide a modern and improved shopping experience.

"Subject to planning permisison, Asda's investment will also bring a better designed and safer car park."
