Euro flop Steve McClaren gets the boot

Steve McClaren after England lost to Croatia at Wembley.

STEVE McClaren was today axed as England manager after the team's failure to reach the Euro 2008 finals.

FA bosses took the unanimous decision at an early morning meeting after England crashed out of the qualifiers with a 3-2 defeat to Croatia at Wembley.

Assistant coach Terry Venables was also sacked for England's failure to qualify for a major tournament for the first time since the 1994 World Cup.

But FA chief executive Brian Barwick - the man criticised for the farcical appointment of McClaren in the first place - will stay on to pick the new national coach.

FA chairman Geoff Thompson today ordered a "root and branch" review of the arrangements around the senior team.

He said: "Like every England fan, we are bitterly disappointed that we failed to qualify."

Barwick insisted the recruitment process for the new manager would be different, with Villa's Martin O'Neill, Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger among the favourites.
