Staffordshire fire engines to carry CCTV cameras to deter yobs

STAFFORDSHIRE fire service is planning to equip all its appliances with security cameras to protect its firefighters from violence and aggression.

The move will go to the next full fire service authority meeting for approval.

Four brand new appliances have already been fitted with CCTV cameras and will be on fire stations in Tamworth, Stafford, Burton and Newcastle-under-Lyme in the New Year.

All fire engines currently on fully-manned stations, including Tamworth, Cannock and Lichfield will have the technology installed in 2008.

CCTV will also be fitted as standard to all new appliances that are purchased in the future.

A report to Staffordshire fire service authority said there had been a steady increase in incidents involving threats and violence towards their firefighters, with those who work in urban areas most at risk.

The report said: "We will not tolerate attacks on personnel and this CCTV will provide the police with valuable evidence for prosecution."

The fire authority is also investing in training courses to help its personnel in dealing with hostility and aggression.
