Christmas carols for shoppers in Birmingham

Christmas carols in Birmingham Cathedral.

WORKERS and shoppers in Birmingham city centre took time out to enjoy a festive treat when a Christmas carol service was staged at St Philip's Cathedral.

The free lunchtime service, which took place yesterday, was organised in a bid to raise cash for charities being supported by Birmingham's Lord Mayor, Coun Randal Brew.

"It was a wonderful occasion that really brought the spirit of Christmas alive as people prepared for their break from work over the festive period," he said.

"It was nice to be able to welcome many people to the event and wish them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year."

Scouts and Guides in the city and St Mary's Hospice in Selly Oak, which provides care for seriously ill people, were set to benefit from the event.

Edward's Trust, which provides support to the parents and siblings of sick youngsters receiving treatment at Birmingham Children's Hospital, was also in line for a slice of the cash.
