MP has technology hope for Longbridge

A LEADING MP said he hoped the half-a-billion pound transformation of Longbridge would turn it into the hub of 21st century technology.

Birmingham, Bromsgrove and Worcestershire councils announced on Thursday they had joined forces on ambitious plans to rebuild the area.

The collapse of MG Rover in April 2005 had spelled disaster for the area with the loss of 6,500 jobs but the new proposals aim to create 10,000 new jobs and 1,400 homes as well targeting hi-tech manufacturing and research companies.

Northfield Labour MP Richard Burden said he hoped the work would take an "imaginative" approach to re-development.

He said: "Longbridge was synonymous with the motor industry during the 20th century. I would like to see it become the centre for new environmental automotive technology.

"When people think environmental sustainability I want them to think of Longbridge in the same way they have linked the area with motor cars."

Mr Burden said alongside new technology development, he wanted to see an ambitious transportation interchange and new education facilities.

The joint council proposals will go before full council on January 8 for approval and before Bromsgrove full council on January 16.
