OAP dies after supermarket lorry accident

AN ELDERLY Midland woman was killed in an accident with a delivery lorry as it left a supermarket.

Pedestrian Beryl Onyskiw, aged 74, from Willenhall, suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her family was today still trying to come to terms with the tragedy.

The accident happened outside the Somerfield store in New Road, Willenhall, as the delivery lorry was leaving the premises about 2.10pm on Friday. The 53-year-old driver of the lorry was unhurt.

Police sealed off the road for several hours and diverted traffic while an investigation was launched.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance said two ambulances, two rapid response vehicles an incident support officer and the County Air Ambulance from Cosford were sent to the scene.

"The woman suffered very severe injuries in the collision," he said.

"An off-duty intensive care nurse attempted resuscitation until ambulance staff arrived. Despite all their skills it was not possible to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene."

Police said Ms Onyskiw's family was too upset to talk about the incident.

Anyone with information should call police on 0845 113 5000.
