Roadworks slow traffic to a crawl

MOTORISTS faced a crawl into work today as major roadworks began on one of Birmingham's busiest roads.

Severn Trent started a £1.4 million water main replacement on the A456 Hagley Road through Edgbaston - scheduled to last about eight months.

One city-bound lane between Sandon Road and Portland Road junctions, and one out-of-city between Chad Road and Lordswood Road is closed.

Traffic appeared to be flowing smoothly, if slowly, along the route during this morning's rush-hour.

A spokesman for Severn Trent said they had worked with Birmingham City Council to ensure there would not be any major hold-ups during the work.
