Pull your fingers out and check those smoke alarms

A WOULD-be politician has backed a campaign calling on residents to check their smoke alarm.

Sarah Merrill, Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for Solihull, is hoping the drive, called Pull Your Finger Out, encourages householders to check their alarms every week.

Ms Merrill carried out her own research and discovered eight out of 10 people in Solihull rarely checked their alarms.

"When I was about 15 the house next door to me in Bronte Close, Shirley, caught fire but luckily no-one was hurt," she said.

"On another occasion, I was standing at the bus stop at the top of Marshall Lake Road when a chip pan in the back of the corner shop set the place alight.

"We called the fire brigade from the phone box but the shop was almost razed to the ground.

"Fires happen all too easily, even at night. If a smoke alarm goes off your chances of survival are more than doubled."
