Birmingham weather: Snow is on its way

People shelter from the rain

THE Midlands was being battered by gale force winds and heavy rain today - and there's snow on the way.

Forecasters said gusts could reach 60mph, bringing downpours and treacherous driving conditions throughout the day.

The skies will clear later as a northerly wind brings cold air.

But plummeting temperatures will leave the region at risk of snow, and up to two inches can be expected in places.

Severe weather warnings are in place for the entire West Midlands from midnight tonight until noon on Saturday.

The Met Office is warning drivers to be wary of icy conditions on the roads as the weekend approaches. Warmer weather is expected to return on Sunday when south westerly winds will bring rain.

Gales were already beginning to cause havoc this morning when the M6 was closed in Cumbria because of the risk of vehicles overturning on exposed stretches in 70mph winds.
