Four years for beer hurler

A ROBBER who pelted a cash guard with beer cans before stealing £13,000 has been jailed for four years.

Gregory Simpson was quickly traced after police recovered the abandoned cash box and a balaclava that had traces of his DNA, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

Recorder James Sampson told long-time drug addict Simpson, 21, of Simpson, of Wordsworth Road, The Scotlands, Wolverhampton, that it was a "hamfisted" offence.

He said security guard Paul Harding suffered a dislocated finger as he tried to hang on to the cashbox and was left "extremely upset and distressed".

Jas Mann, defending, said Harding had had a drug problem since the age of 12.

"It was never his intention to cause any injury during this robbery. It was a fairly amateurish, but it was a grave offence."

Stuart Clarkson, prosecuting, said Simpson and another man pounced on Mr Harding as he was delivering money to the Costcutter supermarket in Wednesfield.
