Youngsters cast a vote for democracy

YOUNG people in Worcestershire are being urged to hit the polls today to cast a vote in the Youth Cabinet and UK Youth Parliament elections.

Polling stations were opened to 11 to 18-year-olds on January 21 with voters getting the chance to pick from 65 candidates.

But voting is set to finish on Friday so ballot slips can be counted in time for the results on February 9.

Coun Liz Eyre, Worcestershire County Council's cabinet member for young people, said: "We're keen young people in Worcestershire do not miss out on their chance to vote.

"It is important they have an influence and shape the services that are key to them in their district.

"By casting their vote, young people will be electing the people they want to speak on their behalf, who will work to make sure their views are heard and listened to."

Split into Bromsgrove, Worcester, Malvern Hills, Wychavon, Redditch and Wyre Forest districts the elections will see successful candidates sit on the Youth Cabinet for two years.

The results ceremony is at the Artrix Theatre, Bromsgrove, on February 9. * To find out more visit www.ycworcs.org.uk or call Gemma Benton on 01905 779893.
