Bishop lends a hand to community

Bishop of Birmingham David Urquhart with Philip Swan

THE Bishop of Birmingham visited a number of churches across the diocese to mark the beginning of Lent.

Starting with a visit St John's Church in Harborne, the Rt Rev David Urquhart then led a service at St Michael's Church in Handsworth.

This was followed by a walk in the streets of Handsworth and Lozells to meet traders and members of the community and a second service at St Paul and St Silas Church in Lozells.

There he was welcomed by Canon Jemima Prasadam, the church's vicar who yesterday launched the start of Hope 2008 Lozells.

The project aims to tidy up Lozells and distribute welcome packs to refugees and asylum seekers in the area.

She said: "It has become a cliche to ask 'what have you given up for Lent'. Yes, we do give up things so other people can benefit but this year our help is for Kenya. We will give up on things and give to the people of Kenya."

The bishop concluded the day with an evening service at St Alphege Parish Church in Solihull.
