Lorry man held on lead theft charge

A LORRY driver has been arrested on suspicion of stealing lead flashing and piping.

The 33-year-old Stourport-on-Severn man was stopped heading towards Birmingham on Monday in a skip-loader vehicle.

An automatic number plate recognition system, which reads number plates and checks them against a police database, picked up on the suspect vehicle and police moved in. He has since been released on police bail.

His arrest takes the number of people detained in the region in connection with scrap metal theft to more than 60.

Project Livewire, run by West Mercia Police, continues to hunt criminals involved with the trade.

* Anyone with information about the incident or any other metal theft can call officers on 08457 444888 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
