Bus catches fire in city centre

The bus ravaged by fire

POLICE sealed off a busy road and brought traffic to a standstill as flames tore through a double-decker bus in Birmingham city centre.

The Travel West Midlands bus, which was out of order and had no passengers, was parked at a bus stop in Priory Queensway when it suffered a suspected electrical fault just after 7pm yesterday.

The fault sparked a fire which spread quickly through the lower and upper decks.

A police cordon was set up around the burning bus and the road was closed off while crews from West Midlands Fire service attended.

Phil Bateman, of TWM, said: "There will be an engineering inquiry into the reason of the fault and that should give us an indication of what happened."
