Brr-acing Brum shivers at -8c

BIRMINGHAM drivers woke to icy roads and windscreens this morning as the region recorded its coldest few days of the year.

Commuters along Aston's A34/A4400 had the worst of the road conditions despite a three-night gritting operation by the city council from Friday.

"We had forewarning and were keeping a close eye on the weather forecast," said a council spokesman.

The city airport was worst hit with temperatures plummeting to minus 8C this morning - although on Saturday night the mercury dropped a further two degrees.

An airport spokesman said flights had not been affected.

"Everything ran smoothly -luckily the weather hasn't had an effect on services," he said.

The Met office's nearby Coleshill observation station recorded temperatures dropping to minus 6.2C early this morning.

"More cloud coverage on Wednesday and Thursday night should improve the situation," a psokesman said.
