City pays tribute to Birmingham leader

TRIBUTES were today pouring in from across the political spectrum to "Mr Birmingham" - former city council leader Sir Richard Knowles, who has died aged 90.

Politicians put their allegiances aside to pay respects to Sir Richard, who helped lead the regeneration of Birmingham in the 1980s and 1990s.

Current leader of Birmingham City Council, Coun Mike Whitby (Con, Harborne) said: "I was sorry to hear of Sir Richard's death. As leader of the city of Birmingham he played a significant role in the renaissance and rebirth of Birmingham.

"He dedicated his life to public service, was an exceptional raconteur and believed passionately in local government.

"He gained the respect of all parties, was one of the longest serving leaders and will be sorely missed."
