Watchdogs investigate fatal collision in Birmingham following police chase

POLICE watchdogs were today called in to investigate a fatal road traffic collision in Birmingham during a pursuit by officers.

The victim, a 17-year-old youth, died when two cars were in collision in Bordesley Green East, Stechford, near the junction with Station Road, at about 9pm on Saturday.

The matter has now been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said today: "One of the vehicles had earlier driven off from a routine police check and was being pursued by a police car.

"The police vehicle was not involved in the collision.

"Enquiries into the incident are at an early stage and the matter has been referred by West Midlands Police to the IPCC as is normal practice in these circumstances."

The spokesman added: "It is believed there were three occupants of the car that made off from the initial police check and one of them, a 17-year-old youth,

was pronounced dead at hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"A total of three other people in the two cars that were in collision sustained injuries."
