Women injured as buses crash in Walsall station

TWO elderly women suffered serious head injuries after two buses collided in an accident at Walsall bus station this morning.

One of the women, aged 73, was trapped underneath a bus and the second woman, also in her 70s, became wedged between a bus and a bus shelter following the collision just before noon.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said that the women has sustained serious head injuries and both were taken by ambulance to Walsall Manor Hospital.

Police sealed off the station as traffic officers began a full investigation into the incident.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said there were numerous 999 calls to the station following reports of a pedestrian in collision with a bus.

"Two buses had been in collision at the station and one of the vehicles had also damaged a bus shelter.

"Two elderly women were badly injured, one trapped beneath the bus and the other trapped between the bus and the bus shelter.

"There were four other patients who had been passengers on the buses, said to be walking wounded.

"The two women were very, very lucky. The woman under the bus had suffered a head injury but it could have been a lot worse. It was an excellent joint effort by the emergency services to release both women."
