A NEW Dutch breed of dog will compete for the first time at Crufts this year.

The Kooikerhondje, a breed that originates from The Netherlands, will have its own category in the international dog show, which begins tomorrow at Birmingham's NEC.

The dog, which was traditionally used for duck hunting in The Netherlands, is now officially recognised by the show's organisers, The Kennel Club, and is able to compete.

Caroline Kisko, secretary of The Kennel Club, said: "People show their dogs and breeds grow in popularity.

"Over time we will allow them to be recognised by us once they have proved that the breed is healthy and they are following good procedure in breeding them."

There are almost 23,000 dogs taking part in this year's Crufts - 1,100 are from overseas, judge Bill Lambert said.

Mr Lambert, who is also health and information manager at The Kennel Club, said this year would be the second largest show in Crufts' history - the biggest being the centenary show in 1991. Crufts runs from tomorrow until Sunday.

Tickets can booked in advance online through the show's website www.crufts.org.uk or by calling 08712310826.
