A MOTHER-of-five has come to the rescue of Kidderminster's annual carnival in a bid to revive the flagging parade.
A shortage of floats has thrown this year's event into crisis after voluntary groups in the town failed to answer the carnival committee's rallying cry to join in the procession.
But now, mum Kate Lane has taken up the challenge to make the carnival the biggest in its 17 year history by bringing in a raft of radical changes.
Mrs Lane, from Broadwaters, has waived the £10 entrance fee for floats and has introduced extra prizes for the best groups in the parade.
Mrs Lane said: "The entry charge doesn't raise a huge amount and we are worried that it might be putting off voluntary groups, who are themselves short of cash.
"Finding a vehicle and driver for a float can be tricky these days, so I want to see a lot more walkers taking part.
"They can be individuals, or from voluntary groups or commercial enterprises.
"They can wear fancy dress - the more ridiculous and colourful the better.
"It really doesn't matter, so long as they have fun."
New categories for entrants into this year's parade include best walking group and best decorated pushchair.
Favourite awards such as best child and adult walkers, best decorated trolley float and best vintage or classic car will continue to run as well.
All money raised will go to the Back on Track Appeal to help replace equipment destroyed in the arson attack on Stourport Athletic Club and Stourport Hockey Club in December last year.
Mrs Lane added: "The carnival is a great day out for all the family and taking part in street parades is enormous fun and gives people a real sense of community.
"I want people to suggest their organisation takes part so we can make it a parade to remember."
