Bad weather set to ease

WINTRY conditions are likely to ease in the next few days as the Midlands shakes off the Easter cold, forecasters said today.

Temperatures hit minus 4C lin Birmingham last night as snow showers continued in parts of the country.

Warmer weather is expected in England and Wales later this week while Scotland will see more snow.

Despite the wintry conditions over the Bank Holiday weekend, predictions of travel chaos were proved wrong.

Network Rail said a massive programme of engineering work on tracks across the country went smoothly.

The Highways Agency said there were no reports of major traffic jams as families returned home after Easter.

Matt Dobson, from MeteoGroup, said temperatures would pick up later this week in England and Wales but the milder weather would bring rain.

"It will not be as cold as it has been," he said.
