Rail services running again after derailed train

Freight train derailed at Gibb St, Deritend

RAIL services were back to normal today following the partial derailment of a freight train in Birmingham.

Four wagons were derailed in the incident, which happened shortly before 7am on Tuesday in Gibb Street, Deritend, near The Custard Factory.

One of the wagons ploughed into a ten-metre high bridge wall, causing bricks and rubble to fall onto a parked car below, but no-one was injured in the incident.

The derailment, which is still being investigated, forced the main railway line into Birmingham to close, causing major disruption to Chiltern Railway and London Midland services into Snow Hill and Moor Street stations respectively. Passengers on Chiltern Railways were forced onto buses between Snow Hill Station and Dorridge or Solihull, while London Midland trains were having to terminate at either Acocks Green or Spring Road.

But repairs to the track were completed last night allowing rail services to return to normal.
