Carnival fun set to return

A SUMMER carnival has been given a new lease of life after an appeal for funding was answered by two businesses.

The annual Kidderminster Carnival, to be held on June 21, had been under threat after a lack of interest from sponsors and local community groups.

But after a desperate plea from event organiser Kate Lane, the parade is now back on track.

June Lacey, owner of Kidderminster flower shop Bridal Train, has offered to provide the 2008 queen, princess and rosebuds with dresses for their big day.

And fairground boss Neil Jennings increased the cash pot for winning floats from £60 to £100.

Organisers of the event today said they were stunned at the support they have had since the appeal last month.

Carnival chairman Colin Hill said: "Finding sponsorship is really hard work and I was stunned when Mrs Lacey contacted me.

"It's great news and we are very grateful for her generosity."

Mr Jennings, who owns Jennings Brothers Fair, one of the carnival's main attractions, offered to boost the prize money after reading press reports that mother-offive Mrs Lane was working hard to attract more entries.

Mrs Lane added: "I was thrilled when he rang and offered to increase the prize money.

"I hope it will encourage more groups to take part and we thank him for his generosity."

The parade route winds through New Road after setting off from the car park at noon.

The long line of floats then make their way through the town, finishing at Brinton Park showground.

Money raised will go to the Back on Track appeal to replace equipment belonging to the Kidderminster and Stourport Athletic Club and Stourport Hockey Club following an arson attack.
