Police granted more time to quiz stepfather

James Hughes

POLICE investigating the murder of a disabled man were today granted a further 12 hours to question his stepfather and a youth, their lawyer said today.

The body of James Hughes, 22, was found at his home in Redditch, Worcestershire, on Wednesday - less than 48 hours after the body of his mother, Heather Wardle, was found at the base of a tree in nearby woodland.

Today at Redditch Magistrates’ Court, West Mercia Police were given until around 5pm to question Brian Kirby, 36, and the youth on suspicion of murder, their lawyer, Basharat Hussain, said.

The pair are understood to have appeared in person at the 45-minute hearing, which was held in private.

Mr Hussain said the 12-hour extension would allow police to hold his clients until around 5pm today.

A post-mortem examination on the body of disabled Redditch man James Hughes has proved inconclusive, West Mercia Police said today.
