Dog saved from drain

FIRE crews from the water rescue unit pulled a terrier to safety after he almost drowned in a storm culvert which had become flooded in heavy rain.

Wesley the terrier was so tiny he managed to slip through grating which covered a drainage culvert in Monkspath Park, Solihull, then vanished down a sump yesterday afternoon.

Watch Commander Paul Riley, of Solihull fire station, said: "We removed the grating and sent one of our crew down into the sump. He managed to drag poor Wesley out by his collar.

"By this time, the dog had stopped barking and was close to death. He was shaking but we didn't need to give him oxygen. We advised his owner to have him checked over by a vet."
