Fire at Great Barr nursing home

The Laurels, in Green Lane

FIREFIGHTERS battled into the night to control a fire which swept through a derelict nursing home in Great Barr.

Almost 50 firefighters were called to The Laurels, in Green Lane, at about 8.50pm yesterday.

They battled for two hours to put out flames which had swept through the two storey building.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said 90 per cent of the roof had burnt away.

In addition, 20 per cent of the first two floors had been destroyed despite the best efforts of the service which deployed two main jets to stem the flames.

One engine was kept at the site overnight with firefighters damping down and remaining on standby.

Crews were today clearing the building and sifting through the wreckage for clues to how it started.

At one stage it was feared that someone may have been trapped in the building, but a search showed the premises were empty.

The fire service was today probing the cause of the fire and police are investigating.
