Man beaten by gang of teen thugs

A MAN was brutally beaten by a gang of teen thugs who chased him down the street and battered him over the head with a beer bottle and a broomstick.

The 32-year-old victim was pursued along Bristol Road South, Selly Oak, by the mob which included a woman who pounced without provocation.

They dragged him to the ground and rained down a series of punches and kicks.

He was also hit over the head with a bottle and stave, suffering a cut above his eye, broken nose and bruised ribs and was kept in hospital overnight.

He also suffered internal bleeding and was kept in hospital following the attack on Thursday evening.

The man was leaving the Super Ali convenience store at about 8.20pm when he was confronted by the gang of up to six men and one woman.

Detectives believe that there was "some sort of exchange of words" in the doorway which sparked the incident that happened near the Subway sandwich shop.

The gang, all believed to be black, fled off across the Aldi car park.

Det Insp Richard Mayhew said: "The man has been chased down the road and set upon him. There appears to have been something said at the shop but we have no motive for it.

"A number of witnesses who saw this incident have already come forward but this would have been a highly visible incident on a busy road and I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened or where the offenders went to come forward."

Detectives visited the victim in hospital yesterday to take a statement from him.

Anyone with information should call Bournville Lane CID on 0845 113 5000 or the Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555111.
