Ammo fires for honour

THE man behind a small Birmingham music shop that has blossomed over the past decade into one of the country's leading black arts organisations has been awarded an MBE.

Ammo Talwar, director of Punch Records, set up in shop in Perry Barr ten years ago.

His energy, innovation and commitment was recognised in the New Year's Honours list for 2008 for his "outstanding achievement and service across the community."

Janette Bushell, who chairs Punch's board of directors said: "For an urban music company Ammo has worked quietly over the past decade making a real difference to the lives of many young people and musicians."

As director of Punch, his imagination and professional generosity has seen thousands of educational workshops and events launching new careers in the music industry.

Many people who have worked with Ammo are now successful DJs, producers and workshop leaders inspiring others to reach their potential."

In particular Ammo was commended for his maverick approach to music education, which has not only changed the face of music provision in the Midlands but also saved the lives of many young people.

Following the ceremony to collect his award from the Queen, Ammo said, "I am blown away by this recognition.

"I feel it is a testament to all the hard work of everyone who's been involved with Punch over the years. I am very proud and humbled by this honour".
