Cyclist is rescued

A MOUNTAIN biker sparked a rescue operation when he fell next to a 'treacherous' embankment in a Midland wood.

The man managed to fight through the pain of serious back and neck injuries to dial 999 on his mobile phone.

A rescue team including paramedics and two rapid response vehicles used the victim's rough directions to track him to a spot in Castle Mill Woods, off Forest Road, in Dudley, at 2.35pm yesterday.

John Hawker, from West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "Once the man was found, he was treated at the scene for back and neck injuries after falling from his mountain bike whilst riding in a heavily wooded area and put on a spinal board with a neck collar."

The biker was treated at Russells Hall Hospital for his injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.
