Chamber of Commerce president hit by stroke

BIRMINGHAM Chamber of Commerce could be without a working president for months after current man at the top, Rod Ackrill, suffered a stroke.

The city’s premier business organisation has been left with a leadership vacuum, with Mr Ackrill currently convalescing on holiday in the Mediterranean after the building tycoon was hospitalised by the sudden attack.

Multi-millionaire Mr Ackrill, one of the region’s best known businessmen, has been advised by doctors not to drive during his recuperation.

The head of Chase Midland Plc, Mr Ackrill took over the reins as BCI President in October last year and still has four months of his office to serve.

|It is understood that the 61-year-old, who lives near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, was on business in the region when he fell ill.

It is not thought to have left any major disability but Mr Ackrill has been told by doctors to rest for a period of time.

Mr Ackrill’s highly successful business career began in his mid-20s when he formed SPI Plc, an importer and exporter of seafood.

A spokesman for Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry said: “Everybody at the Chamber wishes Mr Ackrill a very speedy recovery.”
