East meets West for Brum’s sari sensation

Sunny Bains

SHE is India’s equivalent of Dame Vivienne Westwood on the fashion scene and her work is currently taking centre stage at a unique shop which is offering style along with beauty.

Entrepreneur Sunny Bains decided that business was in her blood, so she has followed the example of her mother and aunt and opened her first shop in Edgbaston’s Monument Road.

Her store, Dhiva, offers Indian designer labels as well as a range of beauty treatments from threading to aromatherapy treatments.

Sunny’s mum, Kash, was a well known face on Monument Road for more than 25 years when she opened a chip shop called the Golden Fish Fry, which is still running today. “I decided to follow in the family tradition and have my own business,” said Sunny, aged 28, who took the plunge after being made redundant last year.

“This area has gone through a lot of changes but I think it’s now on the up.”
