Seaside comes to Moseley residential home

Theresa Butler, Deputy Manager, and Graham Pratt as residents enjoy sun, sand and ice cream at Mapledene Nursing Home

LANDLOCKED old folk in Birmingham pensioners enjoyed seaside fun, without leaving home.

Beach-loving residents at the Maple Dene Home, in Moseley, enjoyed real sand, ice creams and a Punch & Judy show when the car park was converted into a facsimile of a seaside resort.

The grey asphalt was covered with gleaming sand, while residents and visitors dipped their feet in paddling pools and took rides on donkeys.

An ice cream van offered cooling refreshments and kitchen staff dished up the traditional seaside favourite, fish and chips.

Maple Dene manager Leisha Cooper, said: “We wanted to do something which encourages residents to spend time outside the home, to be active and enjoy the fresh air.

“Many of our residents enjoyed trips to the seaside when they were younger, but are now less mobile and unable to make the long journey. But we don’t believe age or mobility should be a barrier to enjoyment, so we thought it would be great for them to be involved in bringing the coast to Birmingham and making it Maple Dene-on-Sea.”
