WALKERS were in a tropical mood for an annual fund-raising event in memory of tragic Walsall schoolgirl Rosie Ross.

The seventh Rosie’s Walk and Festival took place yesterday at Aldridge Airfield.

The day is the biggest annual event for Rosie’s Helping Hands charity which was set up in memory of the 16-year-old who was fatally stabbed as she sunbathed in Birmingham’s Centenary Square in May, 2001.

This year’s event took a tropical island theme with steel bands, dancers, singers and actors.

Rosie’s mother, Karen Ross, said: “The event is always a great day out for families and we are grateful to everyone who took part in the three-mile walk.

“The money raised will help local groups working with children and young people to sustain their valuable work in the community.”

Rosie’s Helping Hands, which provides funding for local groups, has raised around £200,000 for good causes.

Paranoid schizophrenic Inderjit Kainth, of Uplands Road, Handsworth, Birmingham, was ordered to be detained indefinitely in a secure mental health unit by Birmingham Crown Court after pleading guilty to Rosie’s manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
