Birmingham Post Office protest goes to No.10

Gareth Thomas, sub-postmaster at Catherine de Barnes, Joanna Whelan, local campaigner, Maggie Throup, Solihulls Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman, and Mark Parker, local campaigner, hand in the Post Office petition to No.10.

WE’RE off to No.10 with a resounding message which the nation’s politicians will ignore at their peril.

That’s the message from protesters who are taking their battle against Government plans to kill off 26 city post offices straight to the Prime Minister.

The group of angry postmasters, customers and a councillor will board a battle bus on Monday to present a 6,100-plus name petition to representatives from Royal Mail Head Office in Old Street, London, at 11am before heading off to Downing Street for 1pm.

Once outside the famous door, the protesters will hand a copy of the petition to a Downing Street custodian who will pass it to the department bosses behind the unpopular closures.

Thousands have signed the Think Again On Post Office Closures petition organised by the Birmingham Mail since Labour announced that the shutters must come down on 2,500 branches nationwide in June.

The Prime Minister had previously said in an interview with the Birmingham Mail that plans to close post offices across the West Midlands could be reversed if concerned residents took part in a consultation.

Mr Brown said: “I hope people will take part in the consultation and specific closure proposals can be reversed in response to the information that is received.”

“The consultation is still to take place, there have been quite a few changes made after the consultation in different areas.

“There is a consultation process that goes right up to Alan Leighton, who is the chairman of the Post Office.”

The protesters includes Fabirul Islam, from Church Vale Post Office, in Handsworth, and customerAhad Miah, Kamaljit Gill, postmistress of Genners Lane Post Office in Bartley Green, Coun Deirdre Alden (Con, Edgbaston), and Enid Elwin, who is a loyal customer of threatened Sandwell Road Post Office in Handsworth.

Mrs Gill said the journey to Number 10 was an important opportunity to take their fight straight to the country’s decision makers.

She said: “The Post Office is my livelihood and a lifeline to my customers. My customers come first and I have been in the business for 21 years and at Bartley Green for 14 years.”
