Three injured in dog attack in Smethwick

THREE people were injured, one of them seriously, after a dog attack at their home in Birmingham.

The unprovoked incident happened at a residential address in Roslyn Close, Smethwick, shortly before 4pm yesterday.

Two men and a 16-year-old girl were attacked by the dog, believed to be a Staffordshire bull terrier.

The dog is understood to have been owned by one or more of the victims, and they gave authority for the animal to be destroyed immediately.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle to the scene following reports of the attack.

One of the men, aged 36, who sustained serious bites to both arms and his abdomen, was taken to hospital where medical staff were on standby.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival at the scene crews found a woman and two men who had been injured by a dog.

“It is believed that the dog was a Staffordshire terrier or similar. A 36-year-old man suffered a serious bite to his left arm, a bite to his right arm and a bite to his abdomen.

“Crews treated the man at the scene by dressing his wounds before he was transferred to Sandwell District General Hospital in West Bromwich where medics were waiting.”

The spokesman added that the girl and a 38-year-old man suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, but did not require hospital treatment.

West Midlands Police revealed today that no criminal offence had been committed despite the dog attack.

A spokeswoman said: “It is believed the dog belonged to the victims and the owners gave authority for it to be destroyed. That has now been carried out.”
