Apprentice star is guest at RSPCA event in Weoley Castle

Claire Young opens the show with Deputy Lord Mayor Randal Brew and Tia the dog

UNSUNG heroes of the dog world were told “You’re hired!” after a star of The Apprentice cast a critical eye over dozens of pooches from across the Midlands.

Claire Young, runner-up in this year’s series of the BBC’s The Apprentice, was a special guest at the RSPCA Open Day and Dog Show at Barnes Hill, Weoley Castle, yesterday.

People queued up to enter their dogs into a variety of offbeat classes as far removed from Crufts as you can get. These ranged from Prettiest Bitch and Handsomest Dog to Waggiest Tail which, this year, was judged by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Coun Randal Brew.

Claire, who next month starts a new job with Birmingham City Football Club after impressing Karren Brady during The Apprentice, was left to judge the special category of RSPCA Rescue Dog of the Year.

Helen Tuite, community fund-raising manager for the RSPCA Birmingham Animal Centre, said: “These are dogs that don’t have to have been rescued by us but have deserved to be given a second chance.

“The competition gives these rescue dogs their chance to shine, and we are really pleased that Claire was here to judge them.”

She added: “It has gone absolutely fantastically, with people queuing out of the door to enter their dogs for the competition. We have got about 30 entries for each category, which is just great.”

The event also included other types of pets, such as rabbits, as well as lots of charity stands.
