Dudley Council workers in national golf competition
IT MAY be a fair way off their day jobs, but three council workers have certainly got into the swing of their favourite hobby.
Bricklayer Phil Parsons, plasterer Paul Wooldridge and carpenter Matt Emery, who work with Dudley’s housing building services, joined pal Phil Edwards to put in a par-fect display in a national golf competition.
They were four of 336 amateur golfers to enter the competition and were delighted to qualify to play in a finals tournament held in Kitsbuhel, Austria.
The quartet came second in the tournament after playing three competitive rounds of golf against amateur sides from Essex and the eventual winners, Colne Valley.
Mr Parsons said: “We entered the national competition and played against teams from all over the country at The Kendleshire Golf Club, in Bristol.
“After winning the national event we went out to Austria to play against the sides which finished second and third.
“Although we came second in the final, it was a great experience and the course was absolutely fantastic – better than anything any of us have ever played on.”
The three Dudley Council workers have clocked up more than 50 years’ service between them at the authority, working on houses across the borough.
Mr Parsons is based at Peartree Lane depot in Brockmoor, near Brierley Hill, Mr Wooldridge works from Sedgley and Mr Emery is based at Leys depot, in Brockmoor.
The four have been hitting the greens for many years and play off handicaps of between 10 and 16.
Now the foursome have entered into another national event later in the year, which could see them fly off the Marbella, on Spain’s Costa del Sol, for a second international showdown.
