Store raids gang ‘has struck before’

A GANG who battered a supermarket security guard with hammers and shot him with a crossbow are thought to have struck three more times, it emerged today.

The raiders attacked Kevin Logan during the armed hold-up at the Bordesley Green branch of Aldi on August 1.

Kevin, 38, reacted with “instinct” when he raced to the aid of terrified staff but was left with a number of horrific wounds as he tried to fight off the thugs.

They eventually fled empty-handed in a blue Ford Focus, bearing the false registration plates of BN55 MDP. The car had been stolen during a burglary in Coleshill, Warwickshire, on July 24.

Det Sgt Mark Burnell, from Stechford robbery team, said the same car had been linked to three other raids. The gang is believed to have first struck at Somerfield, in Halesowen, on July 31, when masked offenders terrified staff before fleeing empty-handed.

Three days later after the attack on Aldi, in Bordesley Green, raiders burst into the nearby Lidl and threatened staff with a hammer and a knife, stealing a substantial amount of cash.

Detectives have linked the gang to another attack on Lidl, in Kings Heath, on August 5 where they tried to smash their way in but were thwarted by security glass.

The car was discovered in Sandford Road, Hodge Hill, and has undergone forensic analysis.

An appeal will be run on BBC1’s Crimewatch programme tonight.
